You could go to a ceramic shop and have your baby's hand dipped in paint (it's nontoxic) and then on a plate. They can fire it for a washable plate or you can do it in acrylics and then seal it and hang it up or display it just as a decoration. Can also put it on a tile or cup or whatever. Many different price ranges. Will this work for handprint keepsake?
I thought of something you can do at home and if you search modeling clay you can find some recipe there or you can use the one I have below. If you make the clay take something and spray it or over it with shortening or Vaseline and poke it through the top if you want to hang it up so you will have the hole in it rather than try after it is baked. I guess you could find some food coloring to add to it to give it some color. There are many other sites but this is one I thought had it all the recipe and the baking temperature and time all in one.

This is the recipe so you don't have to go to this site if you find this suitable

Baking Clay

Ingredients: 4 cups unsifted flour, 1 cup salt, 1 1/2 cups of water

Directions: Mix with fingers. Store in a plastic container. This cannot be doubled and should be used within several hours. Bake on a cookie sheet or aluminum tray for 1 hour at 350 degrees. Cool. If object is thin only 1/2 hour baking is necessary.
The craft foam witll biodegrade over time and crumble. If you can get a good quality tablet from an art supply store and juse use the paint and put it onto paper. Do several until you get a good one. The paper will last many lifetimes. Some of the ';kids projects'; will use paper plates.(which is a stiff and easy to carry home to mommie.
I don't know if you want that sidewalk paint on baby's skin. How about finger paints on paper, and then you can put it in a nice frame with a poem or a photograph?
