Can someone tell me how this points thing works?

i know you get points for answering and lose points for asking...how do you move up a level? why does yahoo not make their points system more clear? if you have more points...do you win the prize? i dont get it. plus, why should you lose points for asking a question? Can someone tell me how this points thing works?
The points are mostly just an incentive for people to start answering questions, and also to vote on other answers, and finally, to rate other people's answers. As you increase your points and levels you are able to perform more of the standard activity - ask, answer, rate, vote and comment.

Other than that, the points don't do anything. You do get some extra 'attention' at higher levels, but that may or may not be a good thing. There are no secret special prizes, at least none that any of us at Level 7 have heard of.

Mostly, just enjoy the site, ask and answer questions. If you like, keep track of your points as you move up in levels. After awhile, you'll be more interested in responding to people's questions with quality answers.

you lose points because it's a tool to encourage you to answer questions not just ask questions
points just give the recognition to the user's participation. click on ur points and read the first para of the page and tables given over there also. U will come to know how does this point system work.
this site will give your answer

sorry it can't get any clearer than it already is .take some time and really read the rules or the instruction
Just keep answering questions and get more points
yahoo often has contests if people pick your answer the most u win a prize. and i guess in general the points are for showing that u have really good answer skills. and if u get a few hundred points u move up a level and get extra features. i dunno y they take away the 5 points maybe they dont want to many people asking questions at once.
Click on your name or your points amount which should be located on the upper left side or your screen when you are in Yahoo! Answers and it will take you to the site where you can get all that information
as i understand it as they are updating their system with new perks as you get more points the more of these new perks you'll be able to get, however there is a catch a dumb one you can only answer so many per day in order to get points thus it's really odd.

I think they are trying to see how far they can go in getting people to do what they say, while expecting a reward, yet get really nothing.
